What is a Degrees of Difference event?

A Degrees of Difference event is called to help reduce usage during certain times, like when high demand or low electricity generation is expected

These  energy reduction periods may last for up to 4 hours and can be called any time between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Events can be called year-round, but are most common in the winter and summer months

Your thermostat may be adjusted by up to 4 degrees, but you can always opt out by changing the temperature on your thermostat

Degrees of Difference with Manual Thermostats

Even if you don't have a smart thermostat, you can still get rewarded for reducing your electricity use. With the Manual Thermostats program, you can earn a $0.60 bill credit for every kWh of electricity that you save during an event.

The Degrees of Difference program is a free energy management tool that can help reduce electricity usage such as during periods of high electricity demand. Once you enroll and your smart thermostat is connected to the program, your thermostat will automatically adjust during a Degrees of Difference event to help reduce electricity use.

Events can be called at any time during the year, will only last up to 4 hours, and your thermostat will only be adjusted by up to 4 degrees. Rest assured—you’re always in control and can opt out of an event at any time by changing the temperature on your thermostat.

During a Degrees of Difference event, such as during a period of high electricity demand, your smart thermostat will automatically adjust by no more than 4 degrees to help reduce electricity usage and then return to its original setting after the event is over. Events can be called year-round and may last for up to 4 hours. Rest assured, you’re always in control and can opt out at any time by changing the temperature on your thermostat. 

By participating, you can help make a difference without ever lifting a finger. Plus, you’ll be rewarded with a one-time bill credit just for enrolling.1

Yes, if you have an eligible smart thermostat from Google Nest, Honeywell Home or Sensi, you can join the Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program. Your enrollment in the Manual Thermostats program will automatically be cancelled upon your enrollment in the Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program, along with any future bill credits or other incentives associated with the Manual Thermostats program.

Degrees of Difference events can be called at any time of the year between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. There can also be more than one Degrees of Difference event per day. Events are more likely to happen during the summer and winter months when electricity demand is typically higher.

If there is an energy emergency on the electric grid, Reliant may need to call a critical Degrees of Difference event, which may occur at any time of day. 

You must be a Reliant electricity account holder at the time of any Degrees of Difference event. An eligible smart thermostat from Google Nest, Honeywell Home or Sensi is required to participate in the Reliant Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program, along with working Wi-Fi and an active account with your smart thermostat’s app. The eligible smart thermostat must be installed, and you must complete the enrollment process for participation in the Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program. Google Nest thermostats must be registered with Google LLC. An active electricity Smart Meter at your service address is also required.

For customers with a Honeywell Thermostat, you must set up your smart thermostat using the free Honeywell Total Connect Comfort app in order to register your device in the Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program.

Depending on your smart thermostat, notifications may appear on the smart thermostat display or in its mobile app when a Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program event is in progress.

  • Google Nest: A gold gear icon will appear on the display of your Google Nest thermostat and your Nest app to let you know that an event is now taking place.
  • Honeywell: You will receive an Energy Savings Event notification in the Total Connect Comfort app to let you know that an event is taking place.
  • Sensi: On the Sensi thermostat, if you’re currently in an event, you'll see "Active Savings Event" on the thermostat display, along with the time that the event will end. The same information is available in the Sensi app.

During the event, your smart thermostat will adjust your target temperature by no more than 4 degrees. You can override these automatic adjustments at any time by changing the temperature on your thermostat. The temperature will return to its original setting after the Degrees of Difference event has ended.

You can override the modified temperatures at any point by changing the temperature directly on your smart thermostat or in its app. Your smart thermostat will keep the temperatures you set and then return to your regular schedule.

Your participation in the Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program does not affect your current Reliant electricity plan.

1 Program terms and conditions apply. Reliant electricity customers who enroll in Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats by May 31, 2024, will receive a one-time $25 bill credit, which will be applied to the Reliant electricity account enrolled within 2 billing cycles. One-time incentive for new participants in the Degrees of Difference with Smart Thermostats program only.
